Introduction
This is a regular meeting place on Friday Evenings at 9PM EST or Saturday Mornings at 11 AM down under and 2 AM in the UK
Or use it for a private chat anytime
So how does it work??
It utilises the system known as Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
That reqires a "channel" that I setup as #gordonlightfootchat that I then registered with an IRC Server in our case an organisation known as
www.dilex.net
Originally Oregonian Rik Stevens had set up the chat room wayback in 1997 using the identical channel name but the IRC server he registered his channel with (cjb.net I seem to recall it was) sufferred from attacks by internet hooligans and dropped their free IRC hosting/server service which caused me much grief until I found dilexnet as a relacement
I was then able to arrange two distinctly different methods for getting you into the chat room
using an Internet Relay Chat "client" program(m)e such as mIRC which was written by Khaled Mardam-Bay hence mIRC that is for PCs only
Using a browser such as Internet Explorer and a Java "applet" (a small application) called JWIRC that I obtained from the Russian site of its creator one Alexandr Kuricin
No not one of the Men From Uncle but something to do with a Russian glassworks
Initially everybody is suspicious of trying a new bit of software perfectly understandable
therefore please select from the following:-
yes I have mIRC and it has my log in details(log in name etc) already
Simply press this red button this will automatically open mIRC on your own computer and take you to the correct channel and you should find yourself in the room NOTE 1
This page has been written primarily to display the following buttons in Internet Explorer version 6 or higher.
If your browser is unable to interpret the code used for the 3 buttons please scroll down to graphical versions
of them that should act as clickable hyperlinks
I cannot be bothered right now with this mIRC complication so as you mentioned
an alternative using a Java applet I'll go that route for now
Click this Blue button to open a fresh page with a full screen applet NOTE 2
Due to legal arguments with Sun Microsystems some time ago Microsioft agreed not to include their own version of sun's Java software (the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine) in future versions of Windows and Internet Explorer. So depending on the age of your computer and the relevant software you may not have the Microsoft JVM installed and will be unable to run the chat room's Java applet. Certainly Windows XP from Service Pack 2 onwards omitted the JVM. if this is your case I strongly suggest that the simplest method is to get mIRC
WARNING
as the page opens the code calls for the applet to be loaded
a gre(a)y colo(u)red box should pop-up:-
A typical security warning box it might be different and
include a reference to Alexandr's glassworks.
(But is stored on/downloaded from my web site just
like this page. It will give you a security warning and
ask you to accept the applet. Click "yes"
I do not have mIRC but if it is so great do tell me more
click this green button for full details of where to get it
you will find a full description and reasons why you should get it plus if you are using a Mac not a PC some possible alternative programs and details of program registration and configuring Graphical Buttons
